Reflexology is a complimentary therapy that is often carried out on the feet or hands. In reflexology, the feet and hands have reflex points that represent parts of the body. Reflexologists use sequences of movement and pressure to work these reflexes. Working the reflexes removes energy blocks and encourages energy flow in the body. Reflexology cannot cure conditions, but it can promote relaxation and wellbeing, reduce stress, improve circulation, and can aid sleep.
During the first appointment with me, I will take your medical history. There are medical conditions that are contraindications for reflexology; if there is a contraindication, I will discuss this with you and explain why reflexology is not appropriate for you at this time. I use your medical history to inform my treatment plan. For example, if you have shoulder pain due to tension and stress, my treatment plan may focus on promoting relaxation and reducing stress, by working the reflexes related to the shoulder and stress. The first session is normally 75 mins to allow for paperwork such as reading/signing my privacy notice, gathering personal information i.e. medical history, and finding out what you want from the reflexology treatment. The treatment itself will normally be about 50mins in length.
My treatment chair is a Lafuma and once the initial consultation is completed, I will position the chair, so you are lying back with your feet raised. It is helpful if you are lower legs are accessible as I start treatments with a lower leg massage. I will apply reflexology wax to your feet and legs. I use Songbird Reflexology Waxes. I have scented and unscented versions and I try to use the vegan versions wherever possible. I wash my hands at the start and end of the session. To get the full benefits of a treatment, it is helpful if you relax and be. (I am happy to listen if you want to talk). At the end, I provide you with a drink of water to help you get grounded before you leave.
Occasionally after a reflexology treatment, you may have a healing response. This can mean that you may feel a bit off-colour, sleepy, or groggy. This is normal and should pass within 24 hours. I normally suggest that you drink water after a treatment, don’t do any strenuous exercise and don’t drink alcohol after a treatment.
You are welcome to book another appointment with me at the end if the session, or you can book in your own time using the Setmore booking app.
Follow up appointments are 60 mins, and I will start the session checking in on how you felt after the last treatment, asking if there have been any changes to your health, and what you would like the treatment to focus on.
I hope this is helpful and gives you an idea of what a reflexology treatment looks like with me.
